As always, we at Himalaya Caravan Adventure have something extremely special lined up for you, perhaps more so than others you might think. The Dolpo region of Nepal is a mystical corner of the Himalaya, and of the entire world for that matter. Laid out in a remote and isolated region of Nepal, cut off from the outside world from high passes and snow for the majority of the year is what shrouds Dolpo’s mysterious attraction. The Doplo people are ethnically Tibetan, they live an ancient way of life and wear homespun woolen robes and traditional Tibetan boots. Many from Dolpo practice Bon, a pre-Buddhist religion that few have heard of, and it all but disappeared from Nepal in the 7th
century. The very unique and interesting culture of Dolpo was beautifully portrayed in Eric Valli’s film, Himalaya, and also in Peter Mattiessen’s classic masterpiece, The Snow Leapord. We invite you to enter into the spiritual heart of Dolpo, with none other than veteran WT trip leader Hashmat Singh for a high-altitude trekking expedition to Shey Gompa, the spiritual heart. We will visit a revered 11th
century monastery where Tibetans make their sacred Kora, the pilgrimage or circuit of the “Crystal Peak”. This trek is strenuous and we are not saying it will be easy but we can safely say it is worth every single step of the way. There are several high passes (including the Kang La, 18,040ft), this is an incredibly rare opportunity to visit an incredible Himalayan inner sanctum with one of our most beloved trip leaders, definitely not one to be missed, especially for those who are looking for something incredibly special.
Most of the hiking and trekking is performed between an altitude of 10,000 and 16,000 feet, the maximum elevation reached is 18,040ft at Kyang La. This trip has a difficulty level of 6+ and it goes without saying that it is indeed very strenuous. We will be camping at altitudes between 14,000 and 15,000 feet for 7 days of the trek, we also cross three high passes, all of which are over 16,00ft. Having said this, trip members are to only carry their daypack with them; camera, jacket, rain gear, water bottle and other small necessities. Loosely speaking, you are free to hike at your own speed; the group will spread out during the day to cover an average of 6 to 10 miles per day (4-8 hours trekking). There are two days that allow for rest or exploration. Due to the remoteness of the area in which the trek takes place, the trail conditions can be primitive and can often be steep (at times between 2,000 and 3,000 feet in gain or loss of elevation per day. Extremely cold conditions are normally experienced and encountered in the areas with the highest altitudes.
As you should by now understand, you must be in excellent physical condition. We must stress the fact that this is a truly challenging trek and we would encourage everyone to make a special effort to get into top physical shape for this trip. As with any expedition into wilderness regions with high altitudes, there are inherent dangers to be considered: Including everything but not limited to; falling rocks, a serious fall, an accident or a sickness, all without the means or access to a rapid evacuation. The availability of medical supplies or the adequacy of medical attention, once provided, cannot be guaranteed and cannot be expected to measure up to western standards. Each trek is an expedition; we may be able to boast highly experienced veterans of the Nepalese Himalaya, but it takes cooperation and flexibility from each participant to ensure a successful trek
